I don’t eat as much as I would like to eat. I am afraid of getting fat. To me, I am fat. I don’t want to add more weight. It is only the eating aspect. I love food but I try to avoid it. How 16 Year Old Homeless Secondary School Student Graduates Two Years Early With University Scholarship

Resilient Washington, DC resident, 16-year-old Destyni Tyree who lives in a homeless shelter with her mum recently overcame extraordinary odds to not only graduate from high school two years ahead of schedule with a 4.0 grade point average, but she also received an academic scholarship to college.

Destyni and her family were forced to make the shelter their home after her mother lost her job a few years ago, but the hard-working teenager refused to let her situation affect her. She said she used her unfortunate circumstances as motivation rather than letting it get her down.

Destyni said:

“I don’t want to live in a shelter when I get older”. “I want to better my life, so that gave me the drive to do what I want to do,” she told NBC 4 Washington.

With the outstanding support of her mother and the principal of her school, Destyni worked hard to meet and exceed her goal of graduating two years early.

Destyni plans to attend Potomac State University later this year, but is still saving up money for additional educational expenses not covered in her scholarship, like the cost of books.

Her mum said she is very proud of Destyni’s achievement.

5 Strong Reasons Why Post UTME Must Be Scrapped (See Here)

In our time it was strictly JAMB , if you score high, the higher your chances. Though there was malpractice then, JAMB has improved today especially with Computer based testing introduction.

I have wards who passed through the PUME process, which is significantly different from our time, for example, now many schools do not invite second choice for their screening and this is at variance with JAMB procedure. I am also an insider of sorts in the PUME process, and I’ll use the Uniben scenario to give reasons why PUME is illegal and must be scrapped and defaulting schools prosecuted.

1. Post UME infringes on the sole power right of Jamb/UTME to give admissions

If you go through the JAMB act, it states that only the body has the right to conduct exams after charging fees, give undergraduate admissions, carryout placements in Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education. The universities are only supposed to send their requirements and preferences. The only exception is Post graduate admissions. But today Universities charge another amount , sometimes higher than JAMB’s to conduct a parallel exam clearly defying the act, and give admissions using methods known to no one else. Uniben announced admission screening fee of 2000 and optional 1000 for past questions. But the reality is that, processing Uniben PUME/ ASE 2016 costs 3550. There is no option there, it just displays this amount and asks for MasterCard/Verve details.

2. Secondly, Post UME is not transparent, it is even more fraud prone than JAMB

CBT has greatly reduced fraud, eliminating text message answers, buying answers online and impersonation. We now have biometric check in and check out, and CBT even makes the exam easier to invigilate as candidates are forced to stare at their screens and nothing else. A bonus is the availability of system calculator which wasn’t totally available in the era of pencil test.

BUT Pume is not even standardized, no preparation syllabus, some schools purposely set questions from A-Level just to be wicked and reduce number of successful people, others are known for giving very little time. And at the end they just send admission notification without pasting any list publicly and denying some admission even after surpassing the JAMB cutoff.

3. Post UME introduces avenues for special candidates getting better courses

Special candidates refers to Royal father’s recommendees , governor’s candidates , VC’s candidates, staff children and state of origin waivers etc These sets of people would score less than others and must get admitted , in many cases get their course of choice.

In Uniben, to enter the college of Medicine, staff kids have their cutoff 10marks below regular cut off. So while a normal candidate aims for 70, they’ll aim for 60. After taking the number of staff kids they want, the rest is filled with merit and government/royal candidates. And they all wrote the same JAMB. And the non staff candidates who fall under 60 < x < 70 are pushed to pharmacy and Life Sciences.

That is one reason why they do not release cutoff before results, as they need to fit in their people first and adjust and that’s why majority of the post ume era medical graduates are children of doctors and professors; Not because Medicine runs in their veins but because corruption runs instead. There have also been reports of score upgrade in different schools including UNIBEN.

And That is what gives rise to fraudsters, result checkers and predators who take advantage of candidates giving them fake admission. And the school waits till final year exams before publishing lists of fake students, meanwhile they’ve been collecting school fees from 100L.

The Vice Chancellor of the university of Lagos in an interview with news men has stated that the University of Lagos is yet to announce any procedure for screening of candidates in the 2016/2017 session as the university is waiting for guidelines from the government.

According to him,”We are yet to conclude because government has asked us to stay action and wait for a guideline before deciding on the mode of screening, but definitely there will be screening,” he said.

He urged UNILAG prospective students to regularly visit the website for updates.

Commenting on the admission exercise for 2016/2017, the Deputy Registrar, Information Unit, Mr Toyin Adebule, told bewsmen that during the 2016 UTME registration, no fewer than 60,000 candidates applied for admission in UNILAG, which can accommodate only a little over 7,000.

Robbers Attack FUTMINA Student With Cutlass (Photo) - Crime

A 100 level student of Federal university of Technology Minna, Niger state was attacked by thieves yesterday who tried to rob him by using cutlass on him. .. almost the same thing happened when two 100level students were coming back from school yesterday night around 11pm when one of them almost got stabbed but luckily for the student the operation wasn't successful.

These thieves have been robbing students of Futminna right from time especially those in Bosso campus living off campus but it's getting worse now.. these guys ain't joking anymore... is either they come inside the lodge when everyone is asleep or they stop you on the road and they'll make sure you drop whatever gadgets you have with you or else you'll be injured seriously.

I hope the management of Federal university of Technology Minna, Niger State and the Niger state government takes necessary action. This is unbearable .

my wife's father is late and mother is alive. Both my parents are still alive.

we want to work out how much money to send to the parents each month and the problem is she wants to send the same amount both ways. My issue with that is if we send the same amount both ways then one side will need to split the amount between 2 people, yet the other side is one person.

I feel that to make it fair we need to to send by person rather than the side of family. This way each parent gets the same amount of money

Relatives Turning Us Into Their World Bank - Family -

I have been with my husband for a while now and I can say we have been doing well for ourselves. But i have a problem with some relatives that are turning us into their atm machine. My husband has an uncle who has always had other people taking care of his children (5children from 3 different women) for him whilst he goes out to enjoy himself without a care in the world.

Last year my in laws asked us to take in one of his daughters so she could go to school in the city. I was hesitant at first since i did not know much about her or the father, but eventually I warmed up to the idea. Fast forward 6months later, I am sick and tired of it. She does not do her homework without being forced and sometimes she skips school. I have already been called 3times by her teacher making complaints about her attitude in class and her perfomance. If you do not dig for her homework from her bag she will not do it. This girl is already 11 and she is only in grade 4 and she bed-wets.

I do not usually resort to beating a child because I have told myself that should be the last resort, but at the same time I am tired of buying things for her because she is always destroying them. She will wear her best clothes to go play with mud outside and she has turned her school shoes in slippers. She is always losing her stationery and she has torn 2 of her school uniforms already. She once broke the toilet and we had to get a new (not toilet seat, i mean the actual damn toilet) and she broke the plasma in the living room barely 5months after we got it.

As if she is not a big enough headache, her father always finds himself in my house almost every month and he will not leave until you compensate him for coming to your house uninvited. Of course he will expect you to give him money and groceries to take home.

Everything has been frustrating my husband as well and he is considering taking the girl back to her father's house as soon as schools closes and to be honest i really do not have a problem with that, but my issue is that his family is against the idea because its not a christian thing to do (1Timothy 5v8)

To those who have been in the same situation, how did you resolve it amicably and where did you draw the line?

Roy Hodgson has left his post as England manager following the national team’s shock 2-1 defeat to Iceland in their Euro 2016 last-16 tie on Monday evening.

Hodgson’s decision to quit comes as no surprise following England’s loss to a country competing at their first major tournament and with a population of just 329,000 – comparable to Coventry.

The coaches Ray Lewington and Gary Neville have also left the Football Association.

“I’m extremely disappointed of course about tonight’s result and ultimately our exit from the competition,” Hodgson said. “We haven’t progressed as far as I thought we were capable of, and that’s obviously not acceptable.

“I’m actually proud of the work my coaching staff and I have achieved over our time at the helm of England. The transition from the squad whose average age was 30 to now being the youngest in the tournament is both remarkable and exciting for the future of English football. I would have loved to stay on for another two years.

“However, I am pragmatic and I know we are in the results business. My contract was always up after the Euros, so now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry and extremely talented group of players. WARRI—NIGER-DELTA Sea Commandos, NDSC, a militant group, in the Niger Delta, yesterday, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to discontinue his pretentious plea to militants to cease bombing oil and gas facilities and commence dialogue with stakeholders to avert looming disaster.

Spokesperson of the group, self-styled Major Osama Blatter, in a statement, said: “As members of Sea Commandos, we cannot take Buhari’s plea serious and we are running out of patience. The issue is when he will start his dialogue.”

This came as Niger Delta activist, Chief  Bello Oboko, threw his weight behind the call on President Buhari to emulate the Prime Minister of Britain, David Cameron, by ordering a referendum to find out what Nigerians want.

The Sea Commandos asked: “When will Nigeria grant Niger Delta autonomous state? Buhari should not play politics with Niger Delta’s demands. If he plays with us, we will ground his government. Delay is dangerous. We are not interested in any plea.

“Who told Buhari that Nigerians do not have other country than Nigeria? Niger Deltans are not part of Nigeria he is referring to because we belong to Niger Delta Republic.

“Buhari should lead the negotiation team, we want him in the creeks, Buhari should not expect our oil to stabilize Nigerians economy, that is a thing of the past. Since he came back, we have not heard anything from him about the expired two-week ceasefire, he has not announced any extension, which is why we say that he is pretending.  We are warning that we can no longer wait, we will commence attack any moment from now,” it added.

Oboko backs referendum

Meanwhile, Ijaw leader, Dr Oboko, in a statement, said: “This is to appreciate Buhari on his commendation to the British Prime Minister David Cameron on the occasion of United Kingdom, voting to leave European Union, democratically without necessarily applying British Jumbo fighter jets last seen put to use in Libya.

“Referendum to peacefully re-make Nigeria like EU is most attractive, recommendable to redressing the Niger Delta national challenge.

“This is, therefore, to appeal to President Buhari to replicate the British example against military option by adopting the in-out voting democracy to peacefully fix the Niger Delta national challenge at last,” Oboko said.

Buhari should develop N-Delta, says Meinbutus

In a related development, the Amananaowei of Meinbutus, King Jerry Prebor, has asked President Buhari to, as matter of necessity, “roll out the bulldozers and caterpillars to start construction of riverine road and train network in the Niger Delta region.

“He should also commence implementation of the 2014 National Confab report. Mr. President should see himself as President of Nigeria and as such, do what is right to put Nigeria on the world map,” Prebor added.

As he often does during unscripted moments -- particularly papal news conferences -- the Pope spoke expansively, saying the church should seek forgiveness for a number of historical slights committed in its name.

"I believe that the church not only should apologize to the person who is gay whom it has offended," he added, "but has to apologize to the poor, to exploited women, to children exploited for labor; it has to ask forgiveness for having blessed many weapons."
The Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest and editor at large of America magazine, called the Pope's apology to gays and lesbians "a groundbreaking moment."

Repeating the teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church about respecting and not discriminating against gays, Pope Francis said that one could condemn certain behavior.

"But these are things that have nothing to do with the problem. The problem is a person that has a condition, that has good will and who seeks God, who are we to judge? And we must accompany them well."

*Poor States: Yobe, Zamfara, Ekiti, Borno, Kebbi

An investigation by the Economic Confidential has shown that Fifteen States may go bankrupt as their Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) in 2015 were far below 10% of their Federation Account Allocations (FAA) in one year from June 2015 to May 2016.

The report further indicates that the IGR of Lagos State of N268bn is higher than that of 32 States combined together excluding Rivers, Delta and Ogun whose IGRs are very impressive. The 32 other states merely generated a total of N257bn in 2015.

Recently the Economic confidential, an economic intelligence magazine published the total allocation each state in Nigeria received from the Federation Account Allocation (FAA) between June 2015 to May 2016 which signified one year of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The latest report on IGR reveals that only Lagos State generated more revenue than its allocation from the Federation Account by 150% and no any other state has upto 100% of IGR to the federal largese.

The IGR of the 36 states of the federation totalled N682.67 billion in 2015 as compared to N707.85 billion in 2014, a drop of N25.18 billion or a minus 3.56 percent.

The report provides shocking discovery that indicates that 15 states may go bankrupt and may not stay afloat outside the Federal Account Allocation due to lack of foresight in revenue generation drive coupled with arm-chair governance.

The states that may not survive without the Federation Account due to poor internal revenues include Yobe which generated meagre N2.2b compared to a total of N57.4bn it received from the Federation Account Allocation (FAA) from June 2015 to May 2016 representing about 3.9%.

Others are: Zamfara with IGR of N2.7bn compared to FAA of N56.6bn representing 4.8%; Ekiti N3.2bn compared to FAA of N50.460bn representing 6.5%; Borno with N3.5bn compared to N78.7bn of FAA representing 4.5% and Kebbi with IGR of N3.5bn compared to N64.8bn of FAA representing 5.5% within the period under review.

Others poor internal revenue earners are Taraba which generated N4.1bn compared to FAA of N56bn representing 6.4%; Nassarawa N4.4bn compared to FAA of N50.5bn representing 8.5%; Adamawa N4.4bn compared to FAA of N62.2bn representing 7.1%; Gombe N4.7bn compared to FAA of N49.8bn representing 9.6%; Jigawa N5bn compared to FAA of N73bn representing 7%; Bauchi N5.3bn compared to FAA of N72.6bn representing 7.4%; Imo N5.4bn compared to FAA of N71.6bn representing 7.6%; Katsina N5.7bn compared to FAA of N88.8bn representing 6.5 %; Niger N5.9bn compared to FAA of N74.8bn representing 8% and Sokoto N6.2bn compared to FAA of N69.7bn representing 8.9%.

Meanwhile, Lagos State retains its number one position in IGR with a total revenue generation of N268.22bn in the twelve months of last year. It is followed by Rivers State N82.10bn, Delta State N40.80bn, Ogun State N34.59bn and Edo state N19.11bn.

However, these five states look good to be on top of the current economic challenges. They are: Enugu, Oyo, Anambra, Akwa Ibom and Kano with N18.08bn, N15.66bn, N14.793bn, N14.791bn, and N13.611 bn respectively.

The Economic Confidential report further showed that the richest northern state is Kano which is the only state from the North to be among the 10 highest IGR earners while the rest are Southern States. The poorest southern State is Ekiti which is the only state from the South to be among the 10 lowest IGR earners while the rest in the category and bottom of the ladder are Northern States.

Meanwhile, the IGR of the respective states can improve through aggressive diversification of the economy to productive sectors rather than relying on the monthly Federation Account revenue that largely come from the oil sector.

Their intention is to withdraw at least the Bank ATM withdrawal limit of #100,000 daily between that Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

They do this criminal act on Friday evenings when they know Banks had closed for the day and are on weekend break.

They know majority of Nigerians don’t have the phone numbers of their Account Officers or any staff in their bank and as such can’t place a call to have their ATM card blocked by the bank until 7am Monday morning when banks resume.
Precautions

❖ Withdrawal via ATMs should be done at most Friday afternoon when banks are still open.
❖ Avoid withdrawing on weekends especially on lonely and relatively less secure environments.

Fikayo Idowu Is Dead. Drowns While Swimming With Friends - Sports

Idowu hung out with friends on Thursday night and heard that they had planned to go swimming in a lake 40 miles northeast of Columbus on Friday. That was the last his friend Jensen, a fellow Ohio State University player, heard of him.

The following day, a Saturday, Jensen, while picking up another friend, got a call that Idowu died the night before; he drowned while swimming with friends.

“I knew a few people had been invited,” Jensen, told the press. “I just figured I’d stay home. I had to lift, I had to practice. We kind of hung up the phone, and we kind of just looked at each other wondering if it was real.”

“I didn’t believe it at first,” another teammate Tyler Kidwell said. “He was one of my best friends on the team.”

According to reports:

“Idowu was a defender on the Buckeyes team who had played since 2014. He was a junior enrolled in a premed program. Friends said he wanted to be a surgeon.

Idowu was from Madison, Mississippi, and was majoring in health and rehabilitation sciences while planning to attend medical school. He was an Ohio State Prominence Scholar and a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.”

His teammates have since been mourning him, but the Knox County sheriff’s office has refused to release details of the 19-year-old’s death.

“As I understand it, they just went up for the end of the day after classes,” John Bluem, his coach, told Columbus Dispatch. “They just went up to go for a swim.”

Idowu was born to Nigerian parents who are currently based in the United States.

Nigeria may in the next tolume crude oil it produces and pumps every day from her oil fields to 2.3 million barrels (mb), a reliable official source in state oil company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) told THISDAY yesterday.

The source who spoke on the condition that his name would not be disclosed in this report, explained that the back channel overtures initiated by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu to halt bombing of oil facilities and disruptions in production by militants in the Niger Delta were already yielding results.

He said, based largely on the resilience of operators in the country’s oil fields, repair of vandalised facilities have been largely completed and production resumed.

Although the source did not list which of the oil facilities had been repaired and from which the increase in volume was achieved, THISDAY learnt it may include Eja OML79 run by Royal Dutch Nigeria subsidiary, Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC) where production of 90,000 barrels is achieved every day; Obi Obi Brass trunk line belonging to Agip ENI in Bayelsa State; Nembe 1, 2 and 3 Brass to Bonny Trunk Line belonging to Agip and Shell; as well as Chevron’s Makaraba line on the offshore Okan manifold amongst its other facilities at Abiteye, Utunana and Makaraba platforms in Warri South-west area of Delta State.

According to him, operators are already ramping up their production levels and could within the second week of July hit 2.3mbpd, perhaps some few weeks ahead of Kachikwu’s earlier projection of August as a cut-off date to restore Nigeria’s production to about 2.2mbpd.

Kachikwu had last month said he hoped to in his dialogue with militants in the Delta, end the destruction of facilities; restore production and ramp up the countries volumes to insulate the 2016 budget from taking a bashing from low revenue from oil.

The country had indexed its 2016 budget on price level of $38/b for oil. Currently, oil prices averaged $47/b on news of Britain’s decision to exit from the European Union after its Thursday referendum.

“Largely on the back of resilience of the operators; the speed with which they fixed those pipelines and come back into business and restore production levels and start to ramp them up to try and compensate, these resulted in that,” said the source when asked about how the country seemingly maintained a healthy production level despite attacks that had left operations uncertain since February.

He further stated: “We are already just a little below 1.9mbpd and hopefully in another week or two we should be ramping up to about 2.3mbpd which is what the minister shared in the conference at the Transcorp.”

Kachikwu, it was learnt, had spoken to lawyers in Abuja on this when he attended a session organised by the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA).

“So, it is just the efforts and ruggedness of the operators to restore facilities that were disabled quickly and at a very shortest possible time to increase production to normal level and even above to compensate for the losses. Even the pipelines that were running through the creeks and swamps as well as the shallow end of the waterways have been restored,” he added.

He however said the about 6mbd Forcados export terminal was still being repaired.
“Forcados is still a challenge and it is being worked on but we will get there. We are recovering and the engagement with the Niger Delta group that the minister is championing is also helping to maintain peace to allow the operators restore capacity,” the source said.

Braking system is one of the most essential system in a car. The system is capable of bring you to stall from breath-taking speeds. In simple terms, brakes are devices by means of artificial frictional resistance slowpoke or stop the motion of a machine. The brakes enable the driver to slow down the vehicle in motion or to bring it to stop. Problem arises when you can’t achieve this again because of the brake malfunction.

You are speeding on a freeway and you notice that your car brakes are not functional again. Here are what you can do in such a situation.

Be very much aware that there will be hell of adrenaline rush in you body because of the situation at hand. But you should try as much as you can not to panic; you just have to calm down.

Firstly lift you foot off the accelerator (gas pedal, throttle).
Push the gear lever of the vehicle to N (Neutral). This applies for both manual and automatic transmission.
Keep on hand firmly on the the steering wheel and then the other hand on the hand brake.
Keep the hand brake button depressed and then gradually lift the hand brake (Do not lock the hand brake). Doing this will slow down the vehicle, and the slower the vehicle goes, the more you lift the hand brake. As  you are doing this, steer clear off the road onto the shoulder of the road.

If your vehicle has a foot brake, you are going to have to lift your feet of the accelerator when you notice the brakes are no longer working.

When all these things are going on, ensure that you are on seat belt alongside your passengers because the hard stop will definitely cause all in the car to lean forward because of weight transfer.

Non functional brakes are caused by low brake fluids or faulty master master cylinder that controls the vehicle’s braking system.

So I started preaching again like another holy mallam, explaining to her that we should keep the status quo, I didn't want issues or to be perceived as taking sexual advantage of a very young girl who should be studying for her UME examinations. But all my talks ended in deaf ears, cos she just walked up to me, started kissing me and taking off her blouse. I just shouted "no!", left her in my room and went to my sitting room. She later came out crying seriously that she loves me and wants to be with me. It sounded Greek to me, seriously.

Well that evening was really challenging because she simply could not believe that I would refuse to sleep with her. As beautiful as she was. And as sexually virile as I was too.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE SOUTHERN KADUNA PEOPLES UNION (SOKAPU) ON GRAZING RESERVE

On behalf of all the 65 ethnic groups of Southern Kaduna, both at home and diaspora we wish to state our OPPOSITION to the siting of Grazing Reserves within the Southern Kaduna geographical area for several disturbing reasons.

We are also alarmed by the hasty manner the Kaduna State Government donated 5000 hectares of land to the proposed Federal Government Grazing Reserves. This is in addition to the suspicious reactivation of about 17 Grazing Reserves, including moribund ones in the state.

We ordinarily would have wholeheartedly been in support of any scheme capable of halting the unwarranted attacks on our people by suspected herdsmen and their accomplices, but the idea of bringing in the suspected aggressor to sit right in the midst of his victims would be viewed as an official encouragement for continued assault on our people.

Without prejudice to the power conferred on a state government to take custody of lands on behalf of the people, but there is really no inch of land in Southern Kaduna that is a no-man’s-land. Every community in Southern Kaduna has stock of its grassland, farms, valleys, forests, rivers, swamps and hills. We have strong emotional attachments to them, because they are all we have left for us by our ancestors who sacrificed so much to preserve them and pass them on to us. Any attempt to unfairly wrest them out of our hands shall be resisted by our generation and generations to come.

Since one of the main reason of creating reserves for herdsmen borders on reduction of violent conflict between herdsmen and farmers, the weird logic being displayed through this scheme is that: any violent group that can sustain killing of citizens in its goal of advancing its economic status will be rewarded with the lands of its victims. We reject this, and see this action as severe provocation on us and to the thousands of others that have died in the hands of those that would be the main beneficiaries of these Grazing Reserves. It’s beyond belief that any serious government would desire to bring the sources of those violent attacks in proximity with the still suffering victims.

The government has shown its willingness to adopt the identity of all inhabitants of the state on the basis of fairness and equality, but we find it curious why it would deliberately want to annex land and all its resources for the private profits of a private business venture. Pray! Where is the required fairness?

Since the Kaduna State Government has been harping on peace, unity and development of Southern Kaduna, which we really appreciate, it should be sensitive and sympathetic with the humongous disasters that herdsmen have wrought on our communities since 2011. Between 2011 and 2015, over a period of just 4 years, 54 documented attacks have been launched with over 4,000 people killed.

In most of the affected communities, women and children have been killed and brutally murdered in a most barbaric manner. While in some cases they were hacked to death, in others they were burnt alive and or blown up with explosives. Ironically, it’s in a supposedly time of peace that we have had to bury our people in mass graves.

These attacks have rendered thousands of people homeless, as their homes have been burnt, their places of worship destroyed and their food stores, barns and granaries burnt. What is even more, their water sources have also been polluted. They killed or dismembered some and throw them into wells! And the same people suspected of carrying out these genocide that has nothing to do with grass for cows, are the ones being given the government’s approval to sit on annexed land! Within communities that are completely agrarian.

The two groups that fought hard to secure leadership of the Senate last year have remained at logger heads over allegations of illegal amendments to the Standing Rules that purportedly aided the emergence of Saraki as President of Senate and Senator Ike Ekweremadu as Deputy President. Daily Trust on Sunday brings you an in-depth report on major alterations to the Senate Rules and the controversies that trailed the amendments.
Reports of alteration to sections of the Senate Standing Rules have been causing ripples in the Nigerian political landscape since June 9, 2015. The replacement of ‘open’ with the ‘secret’ voting system, among other amendments to the rules, have set the stage for the prosecution of Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, on allegations of conspiracy and forgery.
The forgery suit against Saraki, Ekweremadu, the outgoing clerk to the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa and the deputy clerk to the National Assembly, Mr. Ben Efeturi, is slated for tomorrow at a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The charge preferred against the quad, signed by the principal state counsel, Federal Ministry of Justice, D. E. Kaswe, reads thus, “That you, on or about June 9, 2015, with fraudulent intent, forged the Senate Standing Orders 2011 (as amended) causing it to be believed as the genuine Standing Orders 2015 and circulated same for use during the inauguration of the 8th Senate when you knew that the said order was not made in compliance with the procedure for the amendment of the Senate orders. You thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 364 of the Penal Code laws.”
The 8th Senate has not known peace since its inauguration on June 9, 2015. The crisis rocking the Senate originated from the bitterly contested leadership tussle between the camps of Senate President Bukola Saraki and Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan. Following the controversial emergence of Saraki as president, the Ahmad Lawan-led Senate Unity Forum alleged that Saraki’s camp; the Likeminds, conspired with bureaucrats in the National Assembly to “illegally alter the Senate rule with the intent of dubiously” ensuring his emergence.
Soon after the election, the Unity Forum reported the alleged forgery of the rule to the police for investigation. The present leadership of the Senate was elected based on the Senate Standing Orders 2015 as amended, which contains provisions that differ from the 2011 Orders submitted to the 8th Senate.

The contentious amendments
A comparison of the two documents by Daily Trust on Sunday shows amendments to key provisions regarding the mode of election of the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President. A fundamental amendment to the rule is on the method of voting provided in sections 3 (3e) (i & ii), (f) and (k). The 2011 Standing Orders provides in section 3 (3e) that “When only two senators-elect are nominated and seconded as presidents of the Senate, the election shall be conducted as follows; (i) the Senate shall divide with proposers and seconders as Tellers; (ii) voting shall be conducted by the clerk-at-the-table using Division List of the Senate with the Tellers in attendance. The Clerk of the Senate shall submit the result of the division to the Clerk of the National Assembly; (iii) the clerk shall then declare the senator-elect who has received the greater number of votes elected as President of Senate.”
